Football as a method for teaching at ISC - Pattaya - Mr. Joe Edama

Both playing and watching athletes in competition has always been fascinating for me, irrespective of the sport. I love to learn new skills and value the art of trying something new as a means to enrich my personal life. Not unlike millions of people around the world, however, there was always one sport that I fell in love with, and that is the beautiful game - football.

I started playing it in high school and still play as frequently as possible today. When I was in university taking up my Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, I was drawn to a famous Latin phrase my professor taught me; "men sana in corpore sano", which translates to "a healthy mind in a healthy body". I have carried this philosophy with me and applied it in both my professional and personal life.

The first time I met the children at ISC - Pattaya, I was amazed by how dedicated they were at playing football. I saw great potential and told myself “the world needs to see this!" At the time ISC - Pattaya did not have consistent and competitive football against other schools in the region so I immediately set about creating teams in primary, to use football as a vessel for projecting the same philosophy I live by.

Initially, the scoreboard results didn't go our students way which was understandable due to the lack of competition beforehand. However, all our players across the different age groups have been working hard every training session and learning from every game. Just recently, ISC - Pattaya's under 11's won their first match against MIS and I couldn't have been more proud. It has to be said that the support the children and I have received from parents and other ISC - Pattaya staff has been phenomenal, and it is my belief that ISC - Pattaya has a bright future.

Lao Tzu once said: “The journey to a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ISC - Pattaya has taken the first step and we are committed to take many more.  What makes ISC's football teams unique is we focus more on the many benefits of football rather than winning. Winning is a small part of the total development. We believe that when a child learns to play fair, practices sportsmanship and shows humility, they are winners both in the game and in life.
