Why I Teach Early Years - Mr. Marc Zwartepoorte

I am an Early Years teacher because, for me, it's the most effective and most enjoyable way to change the world. That's the bottom line. If we want to have an impact on the the world, we need to live and breathe this life. Educating the next generation is the way I'm choosing to do it. Teaching allows me to work on hearts and minds, to guide children toward becoming empowered, literate, engaged, creative and liberated human beings. In the future, these are the people who will be able to join in any society around the world and be the next Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein or Martin Luther King.

My preference is to work with younger children in kindergarten or 'early years' as I believe this is where it all starts. It is at this age they start to understand their emotional development that will have an influence on the rest of their life.  To create this, there is a very simple way of helping them to reach this goal: ‘Let them play’!

In their future jobs they will need to have creativity, emotional intelligence and problem solving. During their play, all of these areas of development will be facilitated. An example I like to use in my classroom is that of a superhero. A classroom superhero is someone who will lead, model and initiate discussions. By hosting a tea party for their friends to come to, children will learn organization. Building with duplo lego blocks, up to tree houses when they are older will teach them to innovate and have spatial awareness.

Through play, ISC children will engage with the world around them and this will make them the most creative explorers the world has ever seen.
